3rd WCRA Championships and 2nd Veteran Crowns 2019

3RD WCRA Championships and 2ND Veteran Crowns at Ryemeadows on 11 AUGUST 2019 over 165 yards straights; veterans 150 yards at ½yd/lb plus yd/yr

The track could do with a bit of rain,” said Dave Hunter our Track Manager when us weekenders gathered at the Duke of York on the Friday evening.

On the Saturday we set up. Dave had been a bit modest because when we arrived on the field, the racecourse looked a picture and it was lovely yielding ground when you walked it. Sunday morning was warm and sunny but near the end of weigh-in Dave duly got his rain.

It simply hammered down, cloudburst after cloudburst, each time sending people running for cover. All afternoon. We raced when the weather let up, but even so, round 1 was run through the rain and pity the poor dogs who hated thunder.

Bless the dogs, they coped better than the humans. Gary Hogan’s Minnie was an impressive winner in race 9 , as was WCRCh Ryamber Spring Fever in race 13; race 14 was tight with Call Me Enchanting beating WCRCh Sapphire’s Tanzanite Queen by half a length with Ryamber Fairy Tale a close third. Race 15 was “on the nod” between Pushing The Limit and Now U Sia and in race 16, WCRCh Zola Go-Quick took the Fastest Time rosette with a win in 9.10.

Ian German’s WCRCh Radar, not all that far off veteran won a very tight finish against *Double Trouble in race 18, two very determined whippets. Race 20 was an absolutely horrid draw, Markamy’s Reddie Eddie in trap 1, Stormin’ Norman in 2 and WCRCh Back To Light in 3, the sort of heat the owner of a contender only gets in nightmares, and they finished 1-2-3 in a close race. Alas for Back To Light, he got a nightmare trap as well, absolutely fell out, a good three lengths down within yards.

Race 22 wasn’t easy, either, fast youngster Figaro in 1, Artful Dodger in 2 and WCRCh The Cooler King in 3 who did a trap to almost match Back To Light’s, but grittily scraped second behind Figaro, Artful Dodger unlucky with a slip near the finish.

The planned “short” break became at least an hour as we waited out another big shower before the eight semi-finals – then another deluge as the fifth semi was going to traps. In the first semi, race 34, *Winterfell Must Be Crazy was just edged into 3rd by Zikomo Go-Quick, with WCRCh Sapphire’s Crystal Bell a one-length winner. In the 22-pounders, Minnie won again but so did Angie Parker’s WCRCh Sapphire’s Ruby Queen, who came home three and a half lengths clear of Two In One.

Race 38 (the first 24lb semi) was won by WCRCh Sapphire’s Tanzanite Queen while second-placed *Rising Star gained a measure of revenge to knock out WCRCh Ryamber Spring Fever, who’d narrowly beaten him to win her title in April.

So to the finals, nearly all close finishes. The Salts’ WCRCh (s) No Trouble had a solo in the 16lb final while the Villises’ *Ameesha Swift Shadow prevailed in the 18’s over kennelmate Ameesha Just A Breeze. Christine and Mark’s *Ryamber It’s Aw Reet beat Angie’s WCRCh Sapphire Crystal Bell in the 20’s to gain her half – swift consolation for Angie though as WCRCh Sapphire’s Ruby Queen won the 22lb group from Minnie.

In the 24lb final, the Cuttlers’ *Call Me Enchanting reversed the heat placings to beat WCRCh Sapphire’s Tanzanite Queen by a length. Next, the Hunters’ impressive WCRCh Zola Go-Quick won the 26lb final ahead of WCRCh Jammy Dodger, while in the 28’s, the Salts’ WCRCh Double Trouble won his rematch against WCRCh Radar to gain his title and give his owners a great win double, two new Racing Champions on the same day, congratulations.

The 30lb final was won at the traps. Jackie Hughes’ *Stormin’ Norman stole a length then held on from littermate and clubmate Markamy’s Reddie Eddie, while the Thorpes’ *Figaro scalped two Racing Champions in a tight 32lb final, creditable runs from both WCRCh’s Gimme Attraction and WCRCh The Cooler King.

In the junior vets’, the Villises’ WCRCh VC Ameesha Little Ebs beat Garry Comber’s good lightweight WCRCh Jett Black in the not exceeding 20lb final, then in the 25lb group Gavin Cairns’ WCRCh VC Polly Flinders came home clear of litter-sister VC Call Me Lucky to gain her “full set”. The heavies were won by Jim McLoughlin’s star WCRCh VC Leavit To Me from VC *Ryamber Fairy Nuff; another dog to add a VC to his Racing Champion title, well done.

By coincidence, all three senior veteran winners were gaining their second Veteran Crown. The lightweight class was won by Kim Saxby’s VC Guye’s Goldilocks, while the Eatons’ VC Small Change beat VC *The Were-Rabbit by a length in the middleweights. The last race of the day was a solo win for the Burseys’ WCRCh VC Markamy’s Black Bentley, proud dad of the 20lb and 30lb winners. He didn’t have to, but he trapped very neatly and came up the hill like a good ‘un. Typically, by then the rain had stopped.

So much credit to the crew and helpers. The rain cost us well over two hours but the presentation was finished just after six; no reruns and no equipment failures either. Spare a thought for Michael Treacher trying to take photos in truly awful conditions, and Bob the burger man (it was his birthday). I guess washing machines and tumble-driers were well busy once everyone squelched home, thanks to everyone for taking it all in good part!
