28 JUNE 2015 at The Whippet Meadow, Detling – 240 yards bends
Today we felt the benefit of a dedicated racetrack. Much hard work by Ray and his dedicated crew meant that despite dry, windy weather through April, May and June the going was no worse than good to firm with some lovely ground on the bend, thanks to that magic substance mushroom compost. (Unfortunately it’s also attracted the bunnies and thought is being given to finding an effective solution to keep them off the track.
Racing was done by ten past three on a warm, humid day. We had some rain during the first round but coats were hardly needed and when it cleared up the weather for the finals was much fresher.
The 16lb group was a solo for Sapphire’s Peridot, in the 18lb group the first new Racing Champion was made up, *Ameesha Little Ebs running impressively to beat that fine bend dog WCRh Jett Black. Another new title in the 20lb class, *Wonderwag beating fellow half-coat *Cheeky Devil by a length and a half in a classy final.
WCRCh Polly Flinders, brought along carefully by Gavin Cairns, also showed her class on the bends to win a third championship weight class in the 22lbs, Rudy Roo showing well after a second in her heat. The 24lb final was a rough, tough affair, the time of the race says it all, this has always been a highly competitive group and well done to Winterfell Phoenix for winning through for her half coat.
The 26lb group saw the third and final new title of the day with Fenland Whisper being “made up” to racing Champion, while the 28lb final was one of the most fiercely contested; it looked to be between *Scallywag and *Leavit To Me, who had recorded an impressive 14.88 in his heat, and so it proved despite a game effort by Gold Edition to upset the odds. The race was effectively settled on the first bend with *LeavitTo Me getting knocked back, but what a fine recovery he made to get back to within a length of the excellent Scallywag on the line; another fine dog from the Pat Gant stable.
Fair to say that the Burseys enjoyed the 30lb and 32lb finals, with WCRCh Markamy’s Black Bentley and WCRCh Markamy’s Red Fred both doing textbook bends – they were a pleasure to watch; certainly no disgrace to the beaten whippets, either!
