Superstars Trophy Winners —

Past & Present.

It’s been an interesting project; putting together the lists of previous winners for so many trophies. Unfortunately, there are a few cups where I don’t have any history, so if any of you ‘old-timers’ out there can help fill in the gaps; then I’d be glad to hear from you. For instance, the Patti Platinum (Dogs) trophy hasn’t been engraved before 2002 — yet the bitches go back to 1988.
Fascinating too, I think, to note that there is quite a variance of points from year to year — I wonder why? Where the points were measurably lower, was that because the competition was evenly matched and the points were harder to come by? Or were there more dogs competing for those points?
What was the average weight of the winning dogs over the years? It’s a pity that cannot be analysed as it could be revealing data. Looking at the Laguna Trophy I would say that most of the dogs are over 26 lbs, apart from WCRCh Striker, WCRCh Time Flies and maybe WCRCh Mitcham Cruiser. Although, this is from memory and if anyone can be more accurate then I’d welcome their comments. Can you whippeteers help me with the bitches? You can e-mail me at sandspring_whippets@tiscali.co.uk
How about the veteran winners? Only two dogs won two years running in the Master Veteran League, which is the Mia Amigo plate. I think this suggests that it’s very hard to sustain a veteran’s form at that level of competition.
Have you also noticed that the trophies are not all won by dogs?? The Time Trophy is for the owner or owners whose dogs accrue the most points at WCRA Championships. Although it’s fair to say that Angie Parker and Robin Sweet have had a monopoly so far. Who will win this year?
The breeders’ trophies have been building some interesting data to analyse and I am working on producing some editorial in the near future, so that you can take a look at who’s related to who, how many dogs they’ve produced and which of those have made open & Championship finals. It may prove food for thought!!
A few of these trophies are now beginning to show their age; so we are in the process of replacing some of them — so they’re definitely worth competing for.
Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these compilations — whether you recognise the names as those from the pedigree of your current racing dog or that you have been a whippeteer long enough to have seen them racing!
By the time you read this; the open season will be upon us and I hope to see you all at the WCRA 1st Champs on 1st May, when all of these fine cups and trophies will be handed out to their new winners.
